Cypriot–Russian Friendship Festival – 2006 in Cyprus
The Cyprus – Russian Friendship Association celebrated May Day by organizing a Fete on May 6 2006, in Limassol.
It was officially opened by the President of the House of Representatives Mr D. Christofias and was attended by the Ministers of Interior Mr. A. Christou and Communications and Works Mr. H. Thrasou, the Russiamn Ambassador Mr. A. Nesterenko, the Mayor of Limassol, many officials and over 20,000 persons of different nationalities.
The event took place on the Limassol Reclamation area by the sea and was decorated for the occasion with thousands of balloons in the colours of the Russian and the Cypriot Flags. It included many pavilions serving traditional dishes from Russia and Cyprus, souvenirs and drinks. There were competitions, games, entertainers and a fashion show. The highlight of this event was the performance by Cypriot and Russian folk dancers. Russia's participation was the internationally acclaimed folk group "Yarmaka" under the direction of Vladimir Devyatov, People's Artist of Russia. The event officially ended with a display of fireworks that lit the night sky of Limassol.
