The Pyotr Leschenko Old Russia Festival of music and vocal art
On October 16, 2003 with the support of Moscow City Government and under the auspices of the Club of Music and Vocal Art of the Old Russia named after Pyotr Leschenko, the Old Russia Festival took place in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.
The Club was established in 1991 with the active support of the International Fund of Slavic Literature and Culture with the aim of preserving and promoting the Old Russian music and songs, encouraging the advancement of our musical heritage, major part of which was suppressed by the Soviet authorities.
During the 1920's Russia was abandoned by many talented musicians and performers of Russian folk music and songs. They scattered all over the world, but managed to keep their "small Russia", organizing creative groups and establishing Russian musical theatres.
However only after 80 years the stars of the Russian immigrant music gathered in Moscow at full strength and beauty.
From all over the world great compatriots that participated in the concert in Moscow included among them:
- Boris Rubashkin (Austria) - famous for the 70's hit "Kazachok"
- Balalaika ensemble "Tsar" under the direction of Nikolay Kedrov (France),
- Zhenya Shevchenko (USA) - the legendary Gypsy singer "The Queen of the Gypsy Song", successor to the Dmitrieviches.
- Ivan Assur (Latvia)
- The famous soloist of the Don Cossacks Choir - Sergey Zharov
- Lyudmila Lopato (France) - she sings old Russian romances and performs in Russian restaurants in Paris
For them it was a meeting with the new Russia, for us - a meeting with the Russia that we had never known, that had been lost to us for many years.
